Chicago-inspired Swag Covers, CC Sabathia’s WITB and Justin Rose’s old TaylorMade m3 driver

Aug, 2023

The top 50 PGA Tour players competed this week in the 2023 BMW Championship for the chance to win big money and secure their spot in the Tour Championship, which concludes the season, next week at East Lake.

Olympia Fields’ early-week testing of equipment was slower than “normal” Tour Weeks. This is understandable, given that it is so late in the season and there are so many stakes. The BMW Championship was not without its share of interesting stories about equipment this week.

1) A taste of Chicago Swag

Swag Golf’s connection with the PGA Tour has grown this year, in case you didn’t notice. The company says that its custom-made products were sold in official merchandise tents during several events including The Players Championship and FedEx St. Jude Championship.

This week, the Chicago based company (technically Northbrook, Illinois) took it to the next level for the local event. Swag Golf will be selling four custom headcovers for the BMW Championship. The designs include Deep Dish Pizza and Chicago Dogs.

Swag has also developed a line “Iceman”, which is named after the popular Olympia Fields drink in the local area, and are sold at their pro shop.

Rose runs the TaylorMade time-line gauntlet

Justin Rose, an equipment free agent, has been incredibly creative with his setups. This is especially true with the driver. He’s been using the TaylorMade M2 2016 and the TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus throughout the year. Now he is using the TaylorMade M3 2018 from last year. TaylorMade has a driver release schedule that he is just slipping up and down.

Rose also switched to TaylorMade MG4 wedges in addition his Cobra King MB, CB, and M6 irons. He still uses his Axis1 putting stick.

That’s a GolfWRX approved bag.

4) New TaylorMade Spider Tour puttingters

TaylorMade has unveiled four new models of putters at the 2023 BMW Championship. These include the Spider Tour, Spider Tour X and Spider Tour V.

GolfWRX Equipment Expert Brian Knudson on PGATOUR.com. Here’s a snippet about what he said:

Kirk said to GolfWRX.com that “last week [at FedEx St. Jude Championship] was my first time using them.” I had them in my bag for a couple of months and was just testing them out. The main reason why I used them, would be because they were consistent.

My older blades would come out a little slow from the rough. If I could fly it 330 I would be happy. There were times when I was 160 yards out with an 8-iron and still fell short, as in Greensboro (at the Wyndham championship). They were slow. The occasional jumper would occur. These are really, truly consistent. The colors are a little hotter .”
