GolfWRX.com spotted a Callaway jaws prototype wedge, in Chris Kirk’s golf bag on Wednesday at the Rocket Mortgage Classic 2023. You’ll see some small modifications to the metal in the back weight ports if you look closely.
On Wednesday, we caught up with a Callaway employee to find out what makes the wedge different and why the staffer wants it this way.
Kirk said, “It is a prototype they made just a few days ago for me.” Kirk explained, “They often make the wedges heavier to allow for adjustments in case they are needed. I played around with the wedge for a couple of weeks, chipping and getting to know its sole. They buzzed off some weight from the back because I didn’t think I needed anything changed. It was great as it is.
“I want D4 wedges and D3 irons.” This is how I have done it for quite some time. I am very particular about my specifications – I know them all off the top my head.
I use Project X LZ 6.5 irons for my wedges but S200 wedges for my irons. There’s a slight difference in weight, but it’s not much. I like my wedges to be a little heavier at D4 .”
GolfWRX asked Kirk also about his Callaway Apex MB Irons and why he preferred the black finish over chrome.
“For some strange reason, I always seem to hit darker irons more effectively. My irons would appear smaller if you compared them to a chrome version, but they are not. I don’t understand why, but I do want my irons as small as they can be. That’s why I do it.
“I feel like I will hit you in the face if you hand me a back cavity iron. If you give me an itty-bitty blade, I will flush it. I’ve been like that since .”
