Scott Woodward, LSU’s athletic director, announced on Friday that Chuck Winstead, who was the most successful coach in LSU Golf History and led the Tigers as the NCAA champions of 2015, will step down from his roles as head coach for men’s golf at LSU.
Winstead will take time to focus on his health, before he transitions into a new position within athletics. He has been the head coach of LSU’s men’s golf team since 2005. Andrew Nelson will be the interim head coach for men.
Winstead stated in a press release that “serving as director of golf and the head coach of LSU’s men’s program was an honor of a life time.” “Right away, it’s the best thing for me, my family and this program for me to step aside and focus on my own health and wellbeing. I will always be grateful to all the student-athletes, coaches, and my family who have supported me unwaveringly. LSU has given me the chance to live out a dream that I’ve had for 18 years.
Winstead, who graduated from LSU in 1991, returned to the program as the head men’s coach for 2005-06. The program has won a record 40 team championships, including the 2015 SEC Championships and NCAA Championships. Winstead was named SEC and National Coach Of The Year. It was LSU’s first championship in 60 years. Winstead was promoted in 2018 to Director of Golf. He now oversees both the men’s golf program and the women’s golf program.
LSU’s Winstead has led the team to regionals in every year since 2008, and NCAA match play in three consecutive years from 2014-16.
Woodward stated in a press release that “Chuck is an Tiger through and through.” “We fully endorse his decision to put his health first at this time and will do everything we can to help him through this transition. LSU’s Golf Programs will continue to flourish thanks to his leadership. “He has set a standard of excellence that we will continue to build on and carry forward.”
