Club Junkie Review: Vega Golf VDC, Mizar Tour irons

Dec, 2022

Vega Golf is a Japanese company that has been manufacturing golf clubs since the 1960s. Vega is well-known for their ability to forge metal and for the incredible feel of their irons. This week, I will be discussing the different irons in their lineup as well as how they performed for my purposes. Listen to Club Junkie below, or any other podcast platform for a detailed review. Star Line: Mizar Tour

The Mizar Tour compact distance iron is loaded with technology. The entire body of the Mizar tour is made from S25c steel, unlike multi-piece irons that only have a forged head. For added ball speed, the face is made from high strength maraging steel. It measures only 3.5mm thick.

The Mizar Tour looks great straight out of the box with a light satin chrome finish and a small black badge in its cavity. You wouldn’t believe that the irons are made of multiple pieces. The soles are thin and compact. The Mizar Tour will fit your eye well if you prefer less offset than the long irons. These irons may have the least amount of offset that I’ve seen in any retail iron that’s not a blade. It is slightly softer and more round than VDC irons.

The Mizar Tour makes hitting balls very pleasant. The Mizar Tour gives off-center shots a great feel, but they also have some vibration to give feedback. The ball flight is medium-high, and the irons are easy for players to launch from the turf. Because of their compact appearance and lack of offset, the long irons like the 4 can be a bit intimidating. Even though the longer irons are easier to launch, they are much more fun than you might think.

Mizar Tour’s unique feature is that even if you are not looking at the thin face, you can still see a minimal drop in distance. These irons made it easier to upload shots online than I had expected. Shots low on the face and heel strikes were well received online. You could also notice a slight distance loss when hitting the ball on your toe. The distance irons allow players like me to have a smaller iron that still delivers great performance.

VDC Line

The VDC showcases its amazing milling work on their back side, with dual cavities that enable Vega adjust the CG higher on irons to create the perfect cavity set. They have a more square-toed look than the Mizar line and look great. While the blade is longer from heel-toe, it still has a classic compact look. All irons have micro-milled faces for precise shots and distance control. The sole is narrow with a pre-worn leading edge to improve turf interaction. Again, these irons have very little offset. Perhaps a hair less than the Mizar set. The overall shape of the irons is well-designed and confident players can stand over them.

The VDC irons feel incredibly soft and make two-piece range balls feel very soft. The center is a loud “thud”, which gives you the feeling that the ball has made contact. Although the VDC didn’t provide the sensation of the ball exploding from the face, it did give solid distance and the ability to move the ball in any direction. The Mizar had a flatter trajectory and the ball flew more mid-launching.

The VDC is great for players who like to shape shots. It allows you to go left and right, as well as pick your trajectory and dial in the perfect shots. You will notice a greater distance dropoff when the VDC is away from the center. The shots near the heel maintained a solid, soft feel. Shots out to the toe or low received a little more vibration and click. It was not harsh at all, even in the cold. That responsiveness should be a benefit to those who feel like they are good players.

The VDC cavity iron set is for high-end players. It offers a great soft feel and precision shot making.

The Vega irons have a great feel and high performance. The Classic Line has traditional shapes and a buttery soft feel. You can also choose the Star Line, which is packed with technology and firepower. There is a Vega iron for everyone, no matter what your skill level.
