Five college golfers of women had to make a decision.
You can either pursue a career in the professional world or return to school during spring semester. Michigan senior Ashley Lau, Oregon junior Cynthia Lu and Georgia senior Jenny Bae finished in the top 50 at last week’s LPGA stage two qualifying . This earned them a spot in the final stage qualifying.
If they became professionals.
LPGA rules stipulated that only professional golfers can participate in the final stage this year. Eight amateurs including five college players had to make a decision about whether they wanted to become professionals and skip the spring semester of college-level golf, or return to school to continue their education.
Oregon’s junior Lu decided to remain in school.
Lu said in a text that “I’m thankful to have had the chance to play in LPGA Q School stage I and II because it highlighted some areas of my game which still need to be improved before I turn pro.” “With all that being said, I decided to remain amateur and not attend the Q-Series. I trust Coach Derek (Radley), and Coach Monica (Vaughn), who will continue to support me until I decide to become a professional. I’m so excited to be playing with my team in the spring season. Go Ducks!
Lu is ranked 28th on the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, and 35th on the World Amateur Golf Ranking. She was second in stroke play at the East Lake Cup. The defending champion Ducks are looking to push for another title this spring.
Senior Jenny Bae will also be returning to school. However, Lau and Guseva decided to skip the rest of their seasons and join Q-Series. Golfweek has not yet confirmed Plata’s decision.
Q-Series starts Monday at Magnolia Grove Golf Club in Mobile, Alabama. The top 70 players and ties will advance to the 72-hole final of LPGA cards December 5-11 at Highland Oaks Golf Course, Dothan, Alabama.
