Open Championship players often swap out their high-flood fairway woods for long irons to deal with windy conditions.
Collin Morikawa switching to a TaylorMade 3-iron in preparation for the Open Championship 2023 isn’t surprising. It’s not surprising, until you find out it is a TaylorMade P-790 that hasn’t been released yet.
After testing earlier this week, Morikawa will switch to the fourth-generation P-790 3-iron, a product that has never been seen before.
A TaylorMade rep said that Morikawa needed a driving iron on this course. He tried both the 2 and 3 Irons of the P-790 and preferred the offset as well as the way the 3 Iron sat when he addressed it. “He used it off the tee as well as on approach shots in practice rounds.”
Morikawa’s 3-iron has 18.5 degrees loft, 59 degree lie angle, 39 3/8 inch length, D2.5 weight and is equipped with a shaft from True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid-115.
A TaylorMade representative said that the new TaylorMade P-790 Irons will be released at the end the summer.
Morikawa also switched to a TaylorMade hi-toe wedge at Royal Liverpool in order to improve turf interaction. TaylorMade MG4 wedges in 50 and 56 degree degrees complete his wedge set-up.
