David Toms shot Saturday’s 7-under 65 to jump into first at the 2023 Cologuard Classic.
Toms opened with consecutive birdies, and finished the turn with a 6-under-30. He birdied Nos. 10, 14, 17 and 17, but bogeyed Nos. 16-18 to complete 36 holes at 11 Under at Omni Tucson National, Tucson, Arizona.
“Front nine, obviously, when you shoot 6-under-par first nine, a lot things went well. Toms stated that while I made some good putts, I also hit many nice shots, kept it in play, and got quite hot in the beginning. “I thought it might have been one of those days when I could go really low.”
Toms won the 2021 Ascension Charity Classic, St. Louis in a playoff.
“You can’t get ahead of yourself, certainly.” Toms stated that he never thought about winning a lot back when I won a fair amount on [PGA] Tour. He just went out and played golf, and it just happened.” “Tomorrow, I will have to be aggressive because there are a lot more guys out there. You saw some great scores today. It’s going to be a nice day again so I will have to be hot on another day.
Robert Karlsson is now two shots behind after his second-round 64. Steve Stricker is alone third at 8 under, having shot a 66.
Chris DiMarco scored a 63 to tie for fourth place with Alex Cejka, Retief Goosen.
Brett Quigley, the first round leader, managed a score of 73 on Saturday. He opened with a birdie and then hit a bogey. 8 and 9, and closed with back-toback bogeys.
After rounds 72 and 68, Bernhard Langer is tied with Hale Irwin with 45 for the most Champions tour wins. He is currently tied for 15th. He will play the final round on Sunday seven shots behind.

Langer was able to celebrate a milestone on the Champions Tour by playing in his 1000th round Saturday.
