Double bogey with a clutch putt? Wild finish to the DP World Tour event

Feb, 2023

A clutch putt to double bogey is something you may have heard of.

This was how Daniel Gavins found himself in this situation. He had to wash two balls in the water after the 18 th at DP World Tour 2023 Ras Al Khaimah Championship, but still managed to win.

Gavins said, “I thought that I had (given away the tournament)”. “I put two in water and thought, ‘Well that’s one of the ways to end the tournament.’

The 31-year old Englishman led by two shots on the final hole of Al Hamra Golf Club, United Arab Emirates. However, he found the water twice along his journey to the green. Gavins putted his final 30-foot putt to double-bogey, putting him at 17 under for the tournament. He was one shot ahead of Alexander Bjork (who had a chance for a playoff) and Zander Lombard (who each had a chance for a playoff). Bjork was ahead of Gavins, but bogeyed his last. Lombard missed an eagle to force a playoff.

Gavins explained that he had been struggling to get off the tee the last two weeks. To be fair, I thought that I was holing it for the playoff. Bjork made a bogey, which I didn’t know.

Gavins shot a 3-under-69 round in the final round. He was two shots behind the leader. This included six birdies over the seven-hole stretch, as well as three doubles and three bogeys. This is Gavins’ second win on the DP World Tour. Gavins is now No. 2 on the DP World Tour after his win at the 2021 ISPS Handa World Invitational.

Next on the Tour: The Singapore Classic, February 9-12 at Laguna National Golf Resort Club.
