SCOTTSDALE (Ariz.) — Although the DraftKings Sportsbook opened at TPC Scottsdale on Friday, the first bet was already placed. Former Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald bet $100 on former Arizona State Golfer Jon Rahm winning the 2024 WM Phoenix Open.
The sportsbook will be the fourth retail sportsbook in the Valley after FanDuel (home to the Phoenix Suns), Caesars (home to the Arizona Diamondbacks), and BetMGM (home to the Arizona Cardinals) at State Farm Stadium.
The first sportsbook ever to open in a PGA Tour event location.
Greg Karamitis said that a retail sportsbook wasn’t only about betting. It’s a full-on, immersive experience. There is a lot excitement that comes with having a retail store.
Visitors over 21 years old are not allowed to enter the sportsbook. It has a betting counter and betting kiosks. The betting area includes 40 kiosks and seven ticket windows, as well as rentable booths for groups or parties.
The rest of the building is a full service restaurant and bar with indoor and outdoor seating. All ages are welcome to the restaurant and patio. The facility has 3,400 square foot of video walls that show sports coverage.
The majority of betting is done via apps and not in person
In Arizona, most sports bets placed are on mobile apps and not at retail outlets. Arizona Department of Gaming data shows that $345.62 millions worth of bets was placed on mobile apps in August compared to $3.41 Million placed at retail locations.
DraftKings mobile app had the highest betting volume in Arizona in August, with bets totaling $115.55 millions. FanDuel topped Arizona for bets made on both the app and at a retail outlet. Its app and retail location together accounted for $117.09 millions in bets.
DraftKings will have two flagship locations, one at TPC Scottsdale and the other at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Wrigley Field, in Chicago, is the other flagship location.
Sportsbooks could benefit from daily golfers
TPC Scottsdale, unlike other sportsbooks, is open all year round for golf. It also hosts the WM Phoenix Open in February.
Brad Williams, the general manager at TPC Scottsdale, said: “We hope that the sportsbook is a place for our golfing guests and locals to enjoy.
