HOYLAKE (England) — Englishman Tommy Fleetwood says he has imagined winning the British Open on his home turf a million time.

Fleetwood has a great start to the 151 British Open, as he attempts to fulfill his dream. Fleetwood, 32, shot a 5-under-66 on Thursday at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. He shared the lead in the first round with South African amateur Christo Lambert.

Fleetwood was quick to respond in the affirmative when asked if it was his favorite start at a major.

He said, “One for sure.” “It’s a combination of all things really. We’ve talked about how amazing it is to be on the course playing with all that support and in an Open. It’s a very special time.”

Fleetwood, whose rock-star hair was shining in the sun, sandwiched birdies on Nos. Around his only bogey on the day, at the sixth, Fleetwood sandwiched birdies at Nos. He was out in 34 and added a birdie to the 11 th, then three consecutive birdies at the 14 th.

Fleetwood’s consistency has been on display this season. She has notched six top-10 finishes including a T-5 finish at the U.S. Open last June, and a T-6 at the Genesis Scottish Open.

Fleetwood stated that “it’s better to have good results than being kicked in your teeth all the while when you feel you are working so hard and doing the right thing,” Fleetwood. Fleetwood said, “I believe good results are always motivating and give you confidence to continue pushing forward and doing the right things.”

Fleetwood has yet to win on the PGA Tour. He has 26 top 10s since the beginning of the 2017-18 season, which is the second most of any player in the same period without a victory. Brian Harman, with 28, leads the list. Fleetwood says that he should be patient and have faith in his abilities.

Fleetwood stated, “There are times when it can go either way. It hasn’t yet gone my way.” It’ll be soon my turn.”

He has had many chances to win majors. In 2019, he was second at the British Open behind Shane Lowry. Fleetwood is a Southport native and has been playing golf since he was a child. He wants to be the first Englishman in over 20 years to win the British Open. Nick Faldo won the British Open in 1992. Fleetwood calls Royal Liverpool “hallowed ground,” as it was the links that one of his childhood friends belonged to and where he played on occasion. The crowd will be cheering him on from home, and he’ll get plenty of support.

Fleetwood stated, “I will always be a Northwest boy and having so many people from that area out there supporting me is really, really wonderful.” “You can put yourself under too much stress. You can try too hard. Just having people cheering you on is enough, regardless of whether you hit a great shot or a poor shot, or whether you made a good hole or bad hole. It’s a great way to motivate yourself. “Having the chance to play so close to your hometown is very special and unique.”
