Exclusive: 2024 PGA Tour Schedule; Four events will keep the 36-hole cut

Aug, 2023

According to a copy obtained by Golfweek, the PGA Tour will have a season of change in 2024, with many date changes, new sponsors and plenty of non-cut events, but also a great deal of familiarity.

For the first time since a decade, the Tour will have a calendar year season with 39 events in the regular season and eight more in the fall post-playoffs series. Twelve non-major Tour tournaments have been designated, which means they will offer lucrative purses and a limited field. Golfweek reported that the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am would become a designated tournament. Steve John, the tournament director of the AT&T Tour, refused to comment until the Tour made a formal announcement.

According to multiple sources, only four out of twelve Tour events have a 36 hole cut. These are the Players Championships, the Genesis Invitational and Memorial Tournaments, as well as the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The field sizes for the last three invitationals may vary depending on eligibility. However, several sources indicate that the maximum number of players will be 80 with a 50-player cut. The Players will remain a full field event.

The season-opening Sentry tournament – previously known as the Tournament of Champions- and the three FedEx Cup playoff stops have already had no half-cuts. No players will leave after 36 holes in ’24 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am or the RBC Heritage. The Tour made it mandatory that top stars attend designated events this season. However, under the pressure of players, they have not made these events mandatory in 2024.

The Memorial Tournament, which is hosted by Jack Nicklaus and has traditionally been held two weeks before the U.S. Open will now be played a week prior to the U.S. Open. The Tour wants to establish a cadence for the schedule that will see certain events being held consecutively whenever possible. This will allow players who would otherwise be ineligible to qualify for the designated events based on their performance in previous regular tournaments.

Dan Sullivan is the executive director for the Memorial Tournament and he would not comment before the official release date of the schedule. The schedule will be revealed on August 8.

The PGA Tour declined to comment before the announcement of the schedule.

The WM Phoenix Open separates the AT&T Pebble Beach from the Genesis Invitational. The WMPO finishes every year on Super Bowl Sunday. This will happen again on February 11. The Memorial will be open for three consecutive weeks, followed immediately by the U.S. Open Pinehurst and Travelers.

The schedule for ’24 shows that there are two stops with no confirmed sponsors and some changes in sponsoring.

Houston Open, formerly a fall event, is now sponsored by Texas Children’s Hospital, a hospital. CJ, a South Korean conglomerate, will sponsor the Byron Nelson event after AT&T bowed. The first Florida swing leg, the Palm Beach Classic (formerly the Honda Classic), and an event in July opposite the Genesis Scottish Open sponsored by Barbasol are among the tournaments that await confirmed sponsors.

The schedule is not impacted by any possible changes that may arise from the PGA Tour’s negotiations with Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. However, the Olympics will have an impact. The golf medals are being handed out on August 4, pushing the Wyndham and FedEx Cup Playoffs one week back. Tour Championship, which takes place on September 1, is the season finale.

The Fortinet Championship, which begins on September 9, is the first of the fall events in which players who didn’t qualify for playoffs will compete for priority in the season ’25.
