Grayson Murray, who was due to participate in the 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship, was involved in a serious scooter accident, which caused him to withdraw from this week’s PGA Tour event.

In Bermuda, tourists are prohibited from renting vehicles. Scooters are the most convenient way to move around. Murray had spent an afternoon on the beach and was returning to his hotel at 4 p.m. When he took a turn and approached the center line. Murray collided with the car to the right and rolled 20 feet.

Doug Schwimer was Murray’s week-long caddie. He was riding behind Murray on a scooter and tried to help him as he saw the accident happen. Schwimmer was too fast to slow down and fell off. He was only treated for road rash and wasn’t transported to the hospital.

Murray was left unconscious after the accident and vaguely recalls waiting for an ambulance. He stated to Golfweek that he remembers telling people his knee was hurting and that witnesses encouraged him to stay awake. He doesn’t recall being taken to the hospital.

Murray didn’t break any bones, but he received 50 stitches, 25 on his face and 10 on his legs. There were also other stitches for various parts of his body. Murray believes that he may have sustained ligament damage to his knee. He will be seeing a specialist in North Carolina tomorrow.

“Honestly, I’m quite fortunate because the helmet saved my life. Murray said that if it weren’t for the stitches in my left leg and my knee, I would have tried to play. It is not my fault. It is confusing to ride on the other side of the road, and Bermuda roads are narrow and sketchy.

Murray, who has had alcohol problems in the past has told Golfweek he is sober now and that alcohol wasn’t involved in the incident.

Murray was unable to participate and withdrew his entry, so Schwimer will be taking the place of Johnson Wagner, who entered the field as an alternative because Murray’s accident.

Murray was asked by Schwimer if it was okay to serve as a caddie for someone else in the event. He encouraged Murray to do so, since he was already on the Island.
