With three holes left to play, two teams were tied at the top. One team was just a shot behind after firing the lowest round of the day, a scorching 12-under 60. Seven teams finished four shots behind the leader.
The inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational was a success.
Lydia Ko and Jason Day won the team event at Tiburon Golf Club, Naples, Florida. They finished at 26 under par for the tournament after a final round of 6-under 66. The top prize of $1 million will be split between the winners, and last place will receive $120,000.
Brooke Henderson, Corey Conners and Day all walked away from the course at the same time with a 25-under total. They had only two more holes to complete to be separated. Ko who has struggled to meet her lofty expectations this season stepped up and delivered a brilliant approach to the par-5 seventeenth hole to set up a birdie for gaining the late lead.
The Grant Thornton Invitational is a unique event on the silly-season schedule. PGA Tour Players hope for more events. The first round on Friday was scramble, and the second round on Saturday was foursomes. Sunday’s final game, however, was a modified fourball format. Both players started off with the same ball, then switched it for their second shot. They continued to play that ball until they finished the hole.
Madelene Sagstrom shot a 12-under-60 to finish third with 24 under. Nelly Korda, Tony Finau, Megan Khang, and Denny McCarthy tied for fourth at 22 under.
