Four winners were announced at the Golfweek Senior Tournament of Champions.
The event was held at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens (Florida) and attracted some of the most talented senior amateurs from all over the country.
To name a senior champion, however, 55 holes were required. Ryan Howison was defeated by Ken Kinkopf, who needed an additional hole. Kinkopf was at the top of leaderboards all week and held a share in the 36-hole lead going into Friday’s final round.
To start the day, Howison was two strokes behind Kinkopf but quickly closed the gap. Howison not just retook Kinkopf’s lead but also took a one stroke advantage heading to the back nine. Howison couldn’t muster any more birdies and fell down the stretch. He ended up with three bogeys including the 18th to make it even for the day.
Howison would be in the clubhouse with a piece of the lead. He would need to wait to see what Kinkopf or company could do.
Kinkopf had trouble with the front nine Friday. Kinkopf made the turn at 1:20 on Friday. He started the back nine with two more birdies to increase his week’s total to 2 over to 5.
Kinkopf led the rally with a birdie at the par-4 15th. He then took the lead solo until he made a bogey at the 18th to enter a playoff alongside Howison. Kinkopf won the win with a par and the pair returned to the par-4 18th.
Steve Humphrey completed a great round in the super legends section. The native of Florida won his age division and posted a tournament record with a 54-hole score 4 under 212.
Humphrey won the super legends title with a record 14 shots. Humphrey’s 212 was a good score against the rest of field and would have given Humphrey a nine shot victory in the 55-60 age group.
Don Donatoni compiled rounds of 74 (78), 75 (227), and won the legends division by five shots. Frank Polizzi, a super legend, broke 80 twice to win the 75+ age division by three shots.
