Gary McCord is a golf commentator in Paradise Valley, Arizona. It’s not breaking news, but Gary McCord is one of the golf commentators who, if you get him in front of a mic, you are likely to hear some gems.
McCord attended the recent Arizona Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for the Class of 2020 at Paradise Valley Country Club. The event was an opportunity for decision makers, influencers and players to mix.
McCord was asked, “Why are you here?” McCord, 75 years old, wore a white, patterned sport coat with his trademark mustache.
“Peter,” said he. “Kostis. We’re buddies. We worked together at CBS for over 30 years. “I brought him to Arizona.”
Kostis is one of four inductees for the Class of ’23. The other three are former PGA Tour players Howard Twitty, Judy McDermott, and Wade Dunagan. These two individuals were instrumental in the grassroots of the sport in southern Arizona.
McCord seems to know everyone, but Kostis was the one McCord talked about most. Does he recall the first time that they met?
“Yea. In 1989, we were playing in the Ryder Cup. He admitted that he couldn’t recall the location. It was a road match. We started hanging because he was part of a USA Network team.
You two seemed to get along right away.
“Yea. McCord: “I knew him through the Tour, and he taught a lot of guys.” “He was tired of Florida, so I called and said, ‘You want to come down here [to Arizona]?” Grayhawk is my new home. I want to open a golf academy there and I don’t know what to do.
He said “Let me think it over”, and then said, “Yeah, I’ll get it done” and moved out here.
McCord and Kostis both left CBS at the end of 2019, after their contracts weren’t renewed. The duo now has a Youtube channel titled “Kostis & McCord: off their rockers.”
