Gary Woodland will be honored with a golf complex named after him at his alma matter. He had brain surgery on Monday to remove tumors.

The University of Kansas announced Wednesday that it would rename the complex of golf practice areas in west Lawrence to honor the former Jayhawk who won the 2019 U.S. Open on Pebble Beach.

Kansas Board of Regents approved the request by KU. The Gary Woodland Golf Complex will bear Woodland’s name. It is a “conglomeration” of driving ranges, practice holes and putting areas that are used by both the men’s and women’s teams. The facilities are located in the private country club The Jayhawk Club, north of Clinton Parkway & Crossgate Drive on west Lawrence,” says the KU website.

Woodland, who grew in Topeka, Kansas, and now has a residence in Lawrence, earned KU’s degree in 2007. He has won four PGA Tour tournaments.

Douglas Girod, Chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley said: “He has shown tremendous support for our golf program.”

Woodland chose brain surgery when other treatments failed.

The PGA Tour announced on its website that the majority of his tumor had been removed. He is now resting.
