George Gankas on Brooks Koepka calling Matt Wolff out: ‘I believe it woke him’

Sep, 2023

Geoge Gankas called Matt Wolff, his student at the time, a “huge disruptionist” who was “going change the world golf”.

Wolff, who is 19 years old, won on the PGA Tour quickly. He also held the 54 hole lead in the 2020 U.S. Open and rose to the No. The predictions of Gankas seemed to be a certainty. Wolff rose from No. 13 in the World and held the 54-hole lead at the 2020 U.S. Open.

Wolff, however, has been struggling in recent years. He took time off from golf to improve his mental health. Last year he joined LIV Golf. The Wolff saga got worse when Brooks Koepka called him out for not giving his full effort.

Gankas, 52, has been Wolff’s teacher since he was 13 years old and considers him a son. He recently spoke out about the issues facing his star pupil on the podcast.

Gankas said that Koepka could have done it privately. Wolff was not playing as hard as possible in some instances and Koepka called him out. I’m sure nobody wants to hear this, but it’s what I think. I think it made him more aware.

Even Gankas doesn’t know what sent Wolff into a tailspin.

Gankas stated, “I’m not sure if he was not interested in the attention, fame or what have you or he simply didn’t want play.” He’s working it out now. He’s much more mature than he used to be two years ago.

He said: “I believe there were times when he just didn’t want him to play golf. I am. “I don’t believe the talent has ever gone.”

Gankas, who lives in California, and Wolff, who is in Florida have not seen each other very often. Gankas’s words were perhaps the most telling: “Wolff is a player who has enough money to not want to hear anything from you.”

Gankas said that Wolff flattened his own swing, and that about a year ago they had worked together for the very first time in seven months. Wolff placed T-3 in the LIV Golf Invitational Greenbrier, which took place in August.

Gankas believes Wolff can do great things, and he pointed out that he is still “just a child.”

“I’m sure he will be at the top of golf once again. He is 24. He’s 24 years old. He’s still young. It’s a fact that the talent is already there. “I don’t believe that he will ever completely lose his golf,” Gankas said. He has many good years in front of him.
