Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner have been hired by Pebble Beach Company to redesign The Links at Spanish Bay, in Pebble Beach California.
The original layout, which was opened in 1987, was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and former USGA President Sandy Tatum, along with PGA Tour member Tom Watson. The course is located between the Inn at Spanish Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. It was built on a former sandmine with views of the ocean from nearly every hole.
Hanse and Wagner has become one of the most sought-after architecture teams over the past few years. Original designs like Ohoopee Match Club, in Georgia, and the Black Course in Florida have been designed by them. They have also completed historical restorations of many high-ranked courses, including Los Angeles Country Club which will host the U.S. Open in 2023.
A media release that announced the news did not include any details on the timing of renovations.
Hanse stated in the press release that “The Links at Spanish Bay has nearly everything you could want in a course, from ocean views to rolling, sand terrain.” Our team will have an advantage in delivering a course that is among the best in the world.
