Two of the best public-access courses for golf in Oklahoma are Cowboys and Sooners.
No. No. 1 on Golfweek’s Best List of Public-Access Layouts in Oklahoma is Karsten Creek, Stillwater. This layout was designed by Tom Fazio and serves as the Oklahoma State Golf Team’s home course. Karsten Creek, which was opened in 1994, was named after Karsten Solheim (Ping Golf founder), and it plays around Lake Louise named after Solheim’s wife.
No. Jimmie Austin Golf Club, University of Oklahoma in Norman is number 2. Perry Maxwell originally laid the foundation for the club, which was opened in 1951. In 1996, Bob Cupp and Tripp Davis reworked it.
The top private spot is held by Southern Hills, Tulsa. Southern Hills was designed by Perry Maxwell in 1936. It was restored by Gil Hanse in 2019. Since then, it has hosted a number of top tournaments, including three U.S. Opens. Opens (1958-77, ’01), as well as five PGA Championships (’72, ’94, & ’07) and ’22.
