Golfweek’s Best 2023 – Top 200 Modern Courses In The U.S.

Jun, 2023

Do you want to play on the best modern golf courses in America? We have the best golf courses in America, from Hawaii to Boston. Welcome to Golfweek’s Best 2023, the list of Top 200 modern courses built in the United States after 1960.

The Top 200 Modern Courses is one of the many lists we publish each year. The Top 100 Classic Courses list, the Best Public Courses in Each State list and the Best Private courses in Each State lists are also very popular.

Our course-rating panel is made up of hundreds of members who continually rate courses based on a 10 point system. Each course is also given a single overall rating. These rankings are based on the average of these overall ratings. The average rating for the top few courses is above 9, but many of the best layouts are in the range of high 6 to 8.

Golfweek’s Best has changed the way individual ratings are combined into rankings in recent years to ensure that these lists are current. The compilations only include ratings for rounds played within the last 10 years. This ensures that all courses in the rankings are still up to par.

A course must also receive a minimum 25 votes in order to be included in the Top 200 Modern list or Top 200 Classic. Golfweek’s other lists, like Best Courses You Can play or Best Private do not require the same number of votes. It is possible for a course to appear on some lists, but not the Top 200.

This year, there’s a course that stands out. Landmand Golf Club, in Homer Nebraska, is the highest-ranking course new to the list. It has climbed into a tie with 26th place. Landmand was designed by Tad King & Rob Collins and opened in 2022. The Sheep Ranch Course at Bandon Dunes and Landmand are the only two courses that have been opened since 2020.

The average rating of each course is shown next to its name. Next, it lists the designer, the location, and the year the course opened. In the list, it is noted in parenthesis beside each course’s name where that course ranked by 2022.

There are a few designations after the designer that indicate what type of facility is being built.

  • Private
  • D: Daily fee
  • Resort course
  • t: tour course
  • University
  • m: municipal
  • re: real estate
  • Casino

This list is either new or has been updated.
