It’s true, this isn’t a brand-new concept. From 1960 to 1999, a mixed-team tournament was on the PGA Tour’s and LPGA’s schedules.
The Grant Thornton Invitational in 2023 was a refreshing addition for golfers of today and those who are new to the game. The Grant Thornton Invitational was a welcome distraction, especially with the turmoil that has surrounded the sport.
Jason Day and Lydia Ko, the top-ranked PGA Tour players in the field, won the inaugural event of Tiburon golf club. Ko, after a disappointing 2023 season, looked much better in the weeks leading up to the event.
It was easy to compare the two events, as they were both held at the same location. The mixed event attracted twice as many fans and had more concession sales than QBE. Hospitality areas were also sold out.
Many PGA Tour players expressed their hope that a successful Grant Thornton could lead to greater opportunities for both men and women.
Joel Dahmen said that there was no reason why mixed teams couldn’t be held more often. He partnered with World No. Lilia Vu, World No.
The PGA Tour has so many events, the ratings aren’t always great in some fields. It would be great to bring in women’s golf.
