LIV Golf, a league which has struggled for organic attention during its second season has let its players make headlines at the season finale in Miami.
The LIV Golf Team Championship will be the last chapter of the Saudi Arabian-backed league’s second campaign. LIV players were an open book this week, an eclipse-esc rarety.
Phil Mickelson has only one top-10 finish this year in 13 LIV starts (remember that the field is just 48 players), but he claimed to “know” that more PGA Tour pros will switch over to the Greg Norman led circuit — at least for the time being.
“Do I believe that?” Mickelson replied Wednesday that he does not expect another player movement. “When players see LIV, they are eager to join. Everyone here is enjoying themselves and the teamwork aspect. The camaraderie and enjoyment of each other, as well as the ability to bring golf worldwide and enjoy all that comes along with playing on this tour.
There are a lot players who want to join. How many spots are there? “There are more players who want to attend than there are spots.”
Bubba Watson then claimed that outsiders are incredibly interested in buying the RangeGoats GC team, which he is captaining.
There are anywhere from 10 to 20 people who have requested to purchase the RangeGoats. Three RangeGoats were in Singapore and after that, the floodgates opened. There were even more,” said. This week I met people. There are quite a number.”
Ian Poulter is now coming for Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, as well as the TGL, the technology-infused league that the two major champions will launch in January 2024.
It’s a blatant bribe to Tiger and Rory, to keep them onside. And guess what? Earn them millions in guaranteed money.
Poulter said to The Telegraph that “everyone wants to be involved in team sports.” Look at Wrexham Football Club with the other stars and teams.
The word “sudden” describes the sudden interest of celebrities and sports stars in team sports and ownership. It’s not a new thing. Michael Jordan purchased the Charlotte Hornets back in 2010. Serena Williams and Venus Williams purchased a stake in Miami Dolphins back in 2009. Lebron James made an investment in Fenway Sports Group in 2011.
Not a brand new trend.
It is worth noting that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased Wrexham nearly three years ago.
Look at the F1 news (McIlroy has joined Anthony Johsua, Trent Alexander Arnold and others in investing in the Alpine Team). Not only is there a potential profit margin but also the opportunity to have fun. It’s win-win. Everyone wants to get a little bit, and I think that LIV is a leader here. “Definitely in golf.”
Poulter, along with his teammate Lee Westwood, will face Abraham Ancer of Fireballs GC and Carlos Ortiz in the quarterfinals on Friday.
