Ivor Robson has passed away at age 83. He was a long-time starter of the British Open, known for his distinct voice.
He introduced players in his usual style, starting with “Now, on the tee,” then the name of the golfer. The famously did not take a break for the bathroom between the first and last tee times.
Martin Slumbers said, “We were deeply saddened by the news of Ivor’s death.” As the official starter of The Open for more than 40 years, Ivor’s voice was instantly recognisable and synonymous with The Championship for millions of golfers worldwide.
He was well-liked and respected by all golfers that played in The Open, and I am sure they will feel our sorrow at the news. “On behalf of everyone at The R&A I’d like to send our deepest condolences Lesley Robson, his wife of 61-years, and to the Robson family.”
Thank you Ivor for making each one of my Open starts so memorable https://t.co/7PhZ33FYzF
