Jane Lloyd, the founder of Duke’s women’s golf program, is dead at 91

Jane Lloyd, who was the first woman’s golf coach at Duke and the founder of the program from 1974-1975, has died February 10. She was 91.

Lloyd coached the Blue Devils for five years, leading them to four victories, including two school-record wins during the 1975-76 campaign.

She was first hired by Duke in 1961 on a one year contract. In 1993, she retired as an associate professor of health, physical education, and athletics. She was a teacher in 14 different sports, a health instructor, and acted as a club advisor.

Lloyd was the NCAIAW’s chairman of golf (now the NCAA). He helped to establish the “Big Four” competition with Wake Forest University, Appalachian State, Duke, and North Carolina.

After she retired from the coaching of the golf team, she was active in the Duke sport club program which included 32 student-run clubs.

Lloyd loved to golf and competed in tournaments every summer. She was also an officer in the Carolinas Golf Association and NC Golf Association. She participated in match play tournaments for both North Carolina and South Carolina teams, and in the Trans-National as well as the U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Pine Needles.
