The first piece for the United States Presidents Cup team in 2024 is now set.
Jim Furyk is a 17-time PGA Tour champion and was named Tuesday captain of the U.S. team at The Royal Montreal Golf Club, Montreal, Quebec, Canada from Sept. 24 to 29 2024. Furyk will join Canada’s Mike Weir as captain of the International Team, which was announced in November 2022.
Furyk will be making his debut as captain. He has played in seven Presidents Cups (1998), 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, and holds a record of 20-10-3. Furyk competed at the only event to visit Royal Montreal before, in 2007. He posted a 3-2 score with two wins being achieved while playing alongside Tiger Woods. He was the fourth Presidents Cup player to ever achieve a 5-0-0 record in his final appearance at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in 2011. This led to an 19-15 victory over the International Team. Furyk was qualified to play in the 2015 Presidents Cup, but he could not compete because of a wrist injury.
Furyk has also been a Presidents Cup assistant captain twice: for Jay Haas, in 2015, and Steve Stricker, in 2017. Furyk led the United States at the Ryder Cup in 2018.
“I am honored to be selected by my peers as the captain of the U.S. Furyk stated in a press release that he was “humbled and thrilled” to accept the honor of captaining the U.S. Team for 2024 Presidents Cup. This event has grown tremendously over the past few decades and I’m thrilled to continue this momentum. I am honored to serve as the U.S. 2024 Team Captain. “Team Captain is a remarkable feat.”
Furyk is the ten th U.S. Furyk joins the ranks of Davis Love III (2022), Tiger Woods (2019), Steve Stricker (2017), Jay Haas (15), Fred Couples (2013-2011), Jack Nicklaus (2007), 2005-2003, 1998), Ken Venturi (2000), Arnold Palmer (1996), Hale Irwin (1994) and Hale Irwin (1994) as the 10th U.S.
The Royal Montreal Golf Club was founded in 1873 and is the oldest golf club in North America. Dick Wilson created the Blue Course and Rees Jones updated it in 2004 and 5. Royal Montreal has hosted the RBC Canadian Open 10 times, the most recent in 2014.
Furyk stated that “Royal Montreal is a place I will never forget, and so are many of the other players and fans who witnessed the 2007 Presidents Cup.” The golf course is the perfect venue for match play and I’m sure the Canadian golf fans who will be on site to create a special atmosphere, delivering a very special version of the event, will do likewise.
The U.S. beat the Internationals by 17.5-12.5 at the Quail Hollow club in Charlotte, North Carolina in the Presidents Cup 2022.
