Ask Joel Dahmen about the production of “Full Swing”, and the self-deprecating PGA Tour star will tell you exactly what he thinks.
Dahmen said, “It’s all completely scripted,” and laughed with Golfweek. “None” of this is true.
Of course, he’s laughing. viewers who didn’t have can still enjoy the 8-part series . The fourth installment featured a comprehensive look at Dahmen’s mother’s death, his fight with testicular cancer, and his belief in himself. Chad Mumm, the producer, knew exactly what he was doing with Dahmen and declared that Clarkston’s native would enjoy an increase in popularity following the series’ drop.
Mumm was correct. Soon after the launch, Dahmen saw a 2,000% increase in traffic to PGA Tour digital channels. His best friend and caddie Geno Bonnalie became a social media star with 800% more mentions on Twitter within a week of the launch. According to Sports Business Journal,
Dahmen isn’t letting all his fame make him less recognizable than golf fans.
“I thought it was overall really good. Dahmen stated that they did a great job telling our story. “We have a unique friendship or brotherhood, however you prefer to refer to it.
“But they gave us a lot content that could’ve been very funny and could have gone another way with it.”
What type of content?
Dahmen won’t reveal.
He said, “We’re hoping that we’ll still be here for another season,” with a wry smile.
His popularity is high and Dahmen hopes his performance on the course will follow. Dahmen has failed to crack the top 40 in half-dozen starts this year. He also missed a pair of cuts. Even though he made it to the weekend at Valspar Championship, he shot over-par rounds Saturday and Sunday and fell into a tie for 61st.
This week’s Corales Puntacana Championship could help Dahmen get out of his funk. In 2021, he won the opposite-field event, his first victory on the PGA Tour. While most of the top players in the world are in Austin for WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, Dahmen is a favorite to win in Dominican Republic.
He’ll still have a great time with Geno, who attracts almost as much attention than the player he caddies.
Dahmen stated that despite the popularity of the show, they didn’t realize what they were getting themselves into. We didn’t realize we would be able to have our own episodes of it. They gave microphones to us, which is always dangerous. Then they placed a camera on our heads and let us just roll.
“Just in these last few weeks, there’s been a tremendous response. While I believe we are on the right side, there were some episodes that weren’t quite as positive. It has been fantastic overall.
“And Geno’s signing autographs. He is shaking hands. He is kissing his babies. He’s too cute to be taken anywhere.
