Jon Rahm explains why Tiger’s red-and-black attire was chosen for the final round at Kapalua

Jan, 2023

Jon Rahm has won his Open, the top-class DP World Tour Championship, and now the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Although it was missing Rory or Cam, it still managed to attract most of the top 20 players in the world.

Even Sunday’s amazing victory at Kapalua was not enough to make the Spaniard place fifth on the OWGR. He isn’t even wearing the holy Sunday colors of red or black.

Rahm had an opening bogey and then recorded nine birdies, an eagle, and was seven shots behind overnight leader Collin Morikawa. This is a far cry from days when Tiger Woods dominated most of the weekend’s play. The similarity in winning attire wasn’t lost on Rahm.

Reporters questioned the reason for the tribute at the post-tournament presser. In fact, it was a matter of luck.

Rahm asked, “You want the truth?”

“Bit of crazy day.day. Rahm stated, “I’m not going lie,” before explaining the outfit.

I forgot nearly all the belts that I was supposed bring so I brought a navy and black belt. Kelley, his wife, told me that I didn’t want to be hot all week in black pants and dark shirts so I brought a navy belt and a black belt.

He said, “And that’s all you can tell me.” It’s a silly answer to a stupid question but it’s the truth. Because of Tiger, I don’t usually want to wear anything close to red and black on Sundays. This is his outfit. That’s why I usually wear gray, navy, or other colors. He is too close for me.”

“But, yeah. I didn’t want navy any more. I forgot my belts ……. You wouldn’t expect that. I forgot my socks. Yes, I did forget a few things.

It’s been six years since Golf WRX asked if Tiger should take off his red shirt. If he does, we might have a successor.
