Jon Rahm felt like he missed a few shots during Friday’s second round of the 2022 DP World Tour Championship.
His thoughts were completely different on Saturday.
“I don’t think I could shoot any lower today,” Rahm said. Rahm stated that he had maximized the round. Although I wasn’t at my best from the tee I was able get some birdies even in some difficult situations. I played the par 5s 3-under par despite not hitting any fairways.
Rahm shot a 7-under 65 to take the lead at 15 under heading into the final round. He was four shots behind 36-hole leaders Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick before the third round. But now, those two are chasing after the Spaniard.
Rahm was ranked fifth in the world with seven birdies and no pars at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Fitzpatrick is one behind Rahm, while Alex Noren is two ahead. Hatton, Rory McIlroy and Alex Noren are T-4 at 12 over, three behind. McIlroy was 7 under behind Rahm.
As it stands, McIlroy will win the DP World Tour point standings. With 18 holes remaining, there is still plenty of fluidity in this points race. However, it’s obvious what McIlroy’s goal.
McIlroy stated, “It’s really awesome, I’ve gotten to this stage in golf over 15 years as an amateur, and I’m still trying things for the first-time.” It would be great to win the FedEx Cup and the tour’s rankings simultaneously.
It’s been an amazing year. It’s been a wonderful year. I have played great and consistent golf. It would be a nice way to close what has been a wonderful year.
Fitzpatrick, who is projected second in standings, could win the title as long as McIlroy does not finish solo second.
These two, however, are both following Rahm to Sunday in Dubai.
Rahm stated, “I hope tomorrow I can be better off the Tee and still have the good iron play and good putting.”
