Jon Rahm’s take on gambling fans who are disruptive: “I feel as if we hear them every round”

Aug, 2023

In an effort to influence Max Homa’s and Chris Kirk’s putting strokes during the third round at Olympia Fields of the BMW Championship last week, betting fans shouted at them.

Homa was not shy about his feelings towards the fan who signed his card. “He was cheering at Chris Kirk for missing his short putt, and kept yelling – one had $3 to make my own, so I went to the backside of my backstroke, he said, ‘pull’ loudly[,] and I made it in the middle. Then I started screaming at him and (caddie Joe) Greiner yelled back at him.

Jon Rahm stated that this happens more often than we think during his pre-tournament media conference at East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta.

Rahm, speaking Tuesday before the Tour Championship this week, said: “I feel that we hear it every round.” “That happens a lot more than you might think. It’s all around us.

You can hear the spectators in golf saying things like, “I bet you $10 bucks that he won’t miss it.”

It happens more than you think. Not only on the tee, but also down the fairway. You hear positive things, like I won 20 dollars, you made birdie, etc. It’s actually more common than you might think.

Thursday tee times, how to watch

Rahm said yes when asked if he thought the PGA Tour could do something to stop it.

You don’t want this to spiral out of control, do you? He said, “It’s easy to influence someone in golf. It’s easy. You’re so near, it’s easy to yell the wrong thing at the wrong moment.

“I think the Tour could investigate it. But at the same, it would be very difficult to control 50,000 people spread out around the course. It’s a complex issue. “You don’t want the situation to spiral out of control but you want the fans to enjoy the experience that they desire.”

Rahm is 8/1 to win the FedEx Cup at +800, he will start the Tour Championship on 6 under par, just four shots behind Scottie Scheffler, who starts the Tour Championship on 10 under par.
