Jordan Spieth discusses the challenges involved in coordinating his schedule with new events

Jan, 2023

Jordan Spieth must make a decision.

17 events are now part of the PGA Tour’s revised schedule. These include the Players Championship, four majors, and three FedEx Cup playoffs events. The purses are higher and require top players to participate. Players can skip any of these events, as Rory McIlroy did last Thursday at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

How does a player plan their schedule? Spieth is navigating the new era in designated events. There are many reasons why a player might not attend a particular event. Spieth has narrowed down his choices to the Wells Fargo Championship, Quail Hollow Club, which is the site of the 2022 Presidents Cup or the Travelers Championship, TPC River Highlands.

Spieth stated, referring to his 5-0-0 record in Charlotte, “It would have been an easy decision if not for the Presidents Cup last Year.”

Spieth stated that he will play in four events starting at the AT&T Byron Nelson and ending at the Memorial Tournament, Jack Nicklaus’ event in Ohio. Between is the PGA Championship in Oak Hill and Colonial Country Club’s Charles Schwab Challenge. These are two of Spieth’s favorite courses.

If Spieth was to play at Wells Fargo, it would be the week prior the Byron Nelson. This would mean that he would play five consecutive games for the first time ever in his career.

Spieth stated, “I’ve always wanted Quail Hollow to be played and it just always would have been five in a row.”

If Spieth was to pick the Travelers Championship, that would mean six tournaments in seven week, culminating in Connecticut. What happened the week before? The U.S. Open in Los Angeles was the highlight of the season. This meant a cross-country journey to close what is arguably the most hectic stretch.

Spieth stated, “I don’t know, but it looks like it’s another Quail Hollow, or Travelers, which I like both.” “That’s tough. “But I can’t imagine skipping Jack’s event.”

Spieth, however, and his family will travel luxuriously between all his events this year.

During his pre-tournament conference Tuesday at 2023 Sony Open, he was asked if it was difficult finding a place in Scottsdale for the WM Phoenix Open in February. Glendale, a suburb to the south, is where the Super Bowl will be held.

Spieth and his family had no problems with housing, as they have one on wheels.

Spieth stated, “We’re living the RV lifestyle.” “Yeah, we bought a bus last autumn, so that’ll be in it every week.”

Spieth is this week’s favorite at Waialae Country Club. Spieth missed the cut in his previous start in 2019, but he finished third in 2017.
