Jordan Spieth provided an interesting answer to a question about his putting.

Jan, 2023

Jordan Spieth is a very entertaining player to listen to, but he wouldn’t want his short-range putting to be the main focus of his round.

The three-time major champion continued his brilliance with his quick game throughout 2022. This trend continued last week.

The tape tells the story. Spieth was 190th among 193 players last year for strokes-gained putts within 3 feet.

The 29-year old knows this and was researching ways to improve his recent results using the flat stick.

Spieth’s relationship with the putter at Kapalua has ended since he was ranked first and third in 2016/2017. He now shows an average gain just over one shot for his nine trips to Hawaii.

It might be a good idea for a reporter to avoid such hot topics, but an intrepid journalist decided to ask:

‘Disrespect’? It might, but Spieth isn’t afraid to admit it. He answered honestly, referring to the tricky greens.

“No, I don’t think so. You can get quite a lot within five feet here. He said that he thinks you will miss more here than elsewhere because of underreading and not hitting it with enough speed.

“So, I missed one yesterday because I rushed it. Then today, I missed a 3-footer that I hit. I thought, “I know this putt is a left-edge putt. This is very unusual from three feet. It must have speed. I just ripped the left lip off it.”

Does it bother him?

It really bothers me if I make a bad or tentative stroke. It’s okay if I make a good stroke. Today, that was the case.

Just like most things on the course (including a couple of gambling friends betting on his next move), Jordan Spieth is able to just shake it off
