Luke Donald’s latest choice for vice captain is one of the most experienced European Ryder Cup players.

The 57 year old Spaniard has represented Europe seven times between 1987 and 2006. In 2008, 2010, and 2014 he was also a vice-captain. Olazabal was also the captain of the amazing European comeback in Medinah, 2012.

Olazabal won 18 matches in his seven Ryder Cups, earning him 20.5 points. Olazabal’s partnership with Seve Balesteros is one of the best Ryder Cup partnerships in history. The Spanish duo earned 12 points out of 15 matches together.

Olazabal stated in a press release that he was “obviously thrilled” to be involved in the Ryder Cup once again. “I’m looking forward to experiencing that special adrenaline rush, intensity and electricity that only the Ryder Cup brings – I am really excited to take part in it again. It was a nice surprise that Luke asked me. I wasn’t expecting it, but I was thrilled when the call came. I will play the same role as the other vice captains: to help and support Luke and the 12 players, in whatever way we can. This is so that they can do their best, and win the trophy back.”

Olazabal is Donald’s vice captain along with Thomas Bjorn of Denmark, Edoardo Molinari from Italy and Nicolas Colsaerts from Belgium.

When you think of Jose Maria Olazabal you automatically think of the Ryder Cup. Donald said, “He brings incredible passion and I could not be more excited to welcome him aboard.” He was my captain at Medinah 2012, when I played the Ryder Cup for the last time. I enjoyed playing under him. He chose me to be the number one singles player, which was a hugely satisfying experience.

Olazabal won 33 professional titles worldwide, including 23 European Tour victories between 1986 and 2005. His two Masters victories at Augusta National in 1994 and in 1999 are most memorable. The second was especially emotional, as it came after fears that rheumatoid arthritis might prevent him from ever playing professionally again.
