Kapalua will reopen Bay & Plantation courses. Will the PGA Tour be back in January?

Sep, 2023

Maui Golf fans, there is good news!

Kapalua Golf’s Bay Course will reopen on Wednesday, September 20. The Plantation Course will reopen on Wednesday, October 18. The two golf courses were closed following the Maui fires of August 8. The golf courses and facilities of Kapalua Golf, located in West Maui were spared the fires that devastated Lahaina about 10 miles from Kapalua.

Alex Nakajima, Kapalua’s General Manager said: “Our team is deeply grateful for the support we have received from all over the world in the last six weeks.” Our staff were deeply affected by the fires. Nearly a third of our employees lost their homes and possessions. We continue to provide support to our associates as well as the community, and welcome back team members when they are ready. We are reopening two golf courses on Maui for Kamaaina, local residents and those who plan to return. “As millions of people discovered during the pandemic a game of golf is good for your mind, body, and soul.”

The Plantation Course at Kapalua Golf is open to all resort guests. The Bay Course was designed by Arnold Palmer in 1975. It is more forgiving that the Plantation Course, a Coore/Crenshaw design, which the duo constructed in 1991 and renovated it in 2019. Plantation Course is the host of The Sentry, a long-standing PGA Tour event. In early January, Golfweek released its list of the Best Resort Courses. It is encouraging that the tournament will be held at the reopened course. The Commissioner Jay Monahan asked whether the tournament could be staged in its usual slot as the opening event of the new year.

He said, “We hope that we can be an inspiration to the people of Maui and Lahaina when we arrive in Maui next January.” “I believe at this stage there are so many unknowns and we want respect the challenges. We want to be part of revitalization. There are many considerations. We are committed. You know, if — if allowed, if invited, if embraced and given the amount of work that must be done, we will be 100 percent there. “But I don’t think that at this time, it is in our control.”
