Leading analyst criticizes Lexi Thompson’s ‘distasteful Aramco comments’

Lexi Thompson won her 14th professional title after she proved three shots better than Brooke Henderson, Nelly Corda and their team at Trumps Golf Links in Ferry Port.

After finishing runner-up in seven events, and having missed more than one opportunity to improve on her major win in 2014, her win in the individual section was met with some cynicism after her comments last Wednesday.

LIV Chaiman Greg Norman continues to be positive about the possibility for a LIV Womens Series, which Mollie Marcoux Samaan (LPGA Commissioner) was asked about in July when she was concerned about rumors linking with the Saudi sponsored organisation.

Samaan confirmed this:

It is my responsibility to evaluate all opportunities. If it was going to help us promote women’s golf, I would be open to a conversation. However, players and sponsors must also provide input. Before we do business with LIV .”
, there are many factors.

Although the Aramco series does not make up the LPGA season, a recent link has been made between the LPGA Season and Ladies European Tour. This greatly enhances the status and prize money of the latter, which is why Lexi and Nelly were there last weekend.

LIV’s first event was preceded by much discord over the tour being backed by a dictatorship with a poor record in human rights, especially against women. Eamon Lynch, from Golf Channel, reprimanded Thompson’s comments at last week’s press conference.

Thompson, an 11-time winner of the LPGA Tour, spoke in support of Aramco’s backing. Aramco is closely tied to the Saudi regime.

“I think that LET without Aramco would be weaker than it is today.

They are trying to grow the women’s game, and that is what I support. They’re trying to grow women’s golf, and I fully support that .”

Both Thompson and Nelly Korda spoke very similarly about the discussion of a women’s series. Thompson said:

“It’s speculation at the moment. As a player, I don’t know the details and it is out of my control. This is for the Tour commissioner em>

Thompson was also on board:

“Yeah, exactly. “I mean, there are talks that this might happen, but it hasn’t been brought forward to us. We’re doing the best we can, and that’s just playing the LPGA. We are simply growing the game. .”

Lynch, however, isn’t having it. He calls Thompson’s comments “distasteful”.

Lynch continued,

It’s still… it is soft sportswashing by another title what the Aramco Team Series do. It’s easy prey, because the Ladies European Tour is on fumes.”

After Charley Hull’s comments about her win at Volunteers of America Classic’s, there is momentum behind LIV investment in women’s games. Lynch is not a fan.

He said, “So, it’s easy to throw money at and gain attention for, but they did get attention form a lot of top LPGA Tour player this week.” “The LPGA Tour was open [and] there were a lot of players. It’s not unusual to see appearance fees paid to top female players on the Ladies European Tour.

“Whether any were paid this Week has not been revealed. It was Lexi’s remarks afterwards that the sponsors were doing ‘amazing’, ‘are giving girls chances’, and ‘growing the sport’. This seemed a bit strange to me, considering we are dealing with a regime where the sponsoring regime .”
is Saudi Arabia and its state-owned petroleum company.

He said: “All that it does is prove, in my opinion, if ever there is any kind of alignment between Golf Saudi Arabia or LIV Golf, and the LPGA Tour. If that threat arises then anyone who expects more evidence of a spiritual compass on LPGA Tour will probably be disappointed.”
