Legendary announcer does not expect to be called by LIV after his’spat’ interview with Greg Norman

Nov, 2022

Roger Maltbie received a message last week from NBC stating that he would not be returning to NBC’s broadcast booth in 2023.

Maltbie spoke with Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio about his career and future plans. The 71-year old said that there are hurt feelings, but also a lot gratitude.

Maltbie, who has been with NBC for 31-years, was asked if he would consider broadcasting for LIV Golf’s PGA Tour rival next season. Maltbie said that while he was open to the idea, he didn’t believe it would be possible due to a disagreement he had with Greg Norman, LIV Golf CEO, and that they have a history of falling out.

“Greg Norman, I had a bit of a spat years back. And I doubt that I would receive a call from LIV. Let’s be honest.”

Maltbie, despite his relationship with Norman being strained, defended LIV players and said he had no problems with the league.

He said, “This LIV thing is kind of crazy.” It’s full of hypocrisy.

“I don’t think anyone should be criticized for accepting that amount of money or deciding to do so. It’s still their decision. It’s not something I like about the idea they think they can do it and still play on the PGA Tour. It’s not something I follow, but it’s not what I dislike.

“There are some people who feel a moral outrage at accepting money from the Saudi Investment Fund. Many of the biggest corporations in America do business with Saudi Arabia.

“Why are golfers suddenly the moral compass for the world?” That’s something I don’t get. That’s why I don’t have a problem with these guys taking the money.
