SPRINGFIELD (New Jersey) – Lexi Thompson sprang to life late Friday night at the KPMG Women’s PGA. She poured in four birdies on her last five golf holes, vaulting inside the cutline of Baltusrol’s Lower Course.
Thompson said, “I just want to shoot at pins.” “Trust me. I tried to do it all the time. It was like everything just clicked. “I made some great putts, and I stuck to my plan.”
Thompson, 28, curled a 25-footer to birdie the 8th hole (her 17th), putting an exclamation mark on a day which looked like it was heading for the gutter. She had been 8 over the championship after 31 holes.
Thompson, who is an 11-time LPGA winner and won her last title in 2019, only hit five fairways in 18 holes. She also took 32 putts. She played alongside Rose Zhang, the LPGA’s newest sensation and Minjee Lee, a two-time major champion, to open with a score of 76.

Thompson’s birdie frenzy on Friday gave her a 1-under-70 in the second round. She is now 4 over for the entire tournament and nine shots behind the leader Leona Maguire.
Thompson is currently No. Thompson began the season by sharing third place at the Saudi Ladies International. This is her fifth LPGA appearance of the year. Three of them, including the Meijer LPGA Classic last week, she missed the cut.
Thompson said: “It’s been a tough year, except for the first event I did this year.”
“But I have worked harder than I ever have in my life, both on the course and at home. It’s great to see that hard work pays off. Even though I am still 4 over, it is nice to see the results. I’m going to take it. “I’m building on the small, little win I have right now.”
