LIV Golf changes the format of Team Championship at Trump Doral

Oct, 2023

The 2023 LIV Golf Team Championship will be held at Trump National Doral from Oct. 20-22. It will have a similar format to the event last year near Miami. There will be a mix of stroke and match play as well as a lot of money.

The teams earn points based on how they finish the season: the winning team takes home 32 points while Nos. The weekly standings show that the teams 9-12 are left with nothing. The teams will be seeded after the LIV’s last regular-season event this week in Jeddah based on the position they hold in the final standings of the Team Championship.

The three-day Miami shotgun start tournament features a purse of $50 million, as well as singles and foursomes in the quarterfinals and semifinals on Friday and Saturday. Stroke play is used for the final round on Sunday.

Only four teams from last year’s semifinals played on Sunday. All 12 teams will compete this season. 48 players, including those who were eliminated from the quarterfinals on Friday, will also play. This decision ensures that all players compete twice, and is intended to improve the experience of fans for the final rounds. It may be confusing for the fans.

Team Championship Format

Friday, Oct. 20 – Quarterfinals

  • The teams seeded 1 to 4 receive a free bye.
  • The top 12 teams will face off in a head-to-head match, with the highest ranked teams selecting their opponents.
  • The 32 players of these eight teams will play three matches simultaneously, starting with a shotgun. There will be two singles matches as well as one alternate-shot match.
  • The matches will continue until there is a clear winner. Each win in a match earns you a point. The first team with two points advances to the semifinal round on Saturday.

Saturday, October 21 – Semifinals

  • The teams seeded 1 to 4 will face the teams that won on Friday. Once again, the teams with the highest ranking will select their opponents.
  • The 32 players of these eight teams will play three matches simultaneously, starting with a shotgun. There will be two singles matches as well as one alternate-shot match.
  • The matches will continue until there is a clear winner. Each win in a match earns you a point. After Sunday’s final round, the four teams that win two points qualify for the top four. The teams that were eliminated in the semi-finals will be placed in the Nos. 5-8 bracket after Sunday’s final round. Teams eliminated on Friday will be placed in bracket Nos. 9-12 bracket after Sunday’s final round.

Sunday, October 22 – Finals

  • The 48 players and the 12 teams will all compete in a single round of strokeplay. The team score is based on the four individual scores.
  • The four teams who won the semi-finals will then compete for first to fourth place. The four teams that were eliminated from the semifinals will be competing for 5th-8th places. The four teams that were eliminated in the quarterfinals compete for 9th-12th position.

If, for example, Kevin Na’s Iron Heads lost on Friday but then got hot on Sunday, winning the final stroke play day, they would finish in ninth. If Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers finish fifth despite winning in the quarterfinals but losing in the semi-finals, this is because they lost in the semifinals.

Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces are in the lead with a 10-point advantage over Bryson deChambeau Crushers. Torque, led by Joaquin Niemann and in third place, is the leader of the league this season with four team wins.
