Martin Slumbers, the R&A and the R&A were open to discussing the impending decision about whether LIV golf members would be allowed into the Open.
Let me be clear. It’s not on our agenda ,” Slumbers said in July, just before the 150th Open at St. Andrews.
Then, in October at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, Slumbers repeated his message in Golf Digest: “We will make public in January/February what we plan to do regarding LIV golfers. For a guide, refer to my July statement. We are not banning anyone. We won’t betray 150 years worth of history or make the Open closed.”
He has kept his word.
Officially, the R&A announced that LIV members who are qualified will be permitted to participate in the 151st edition of Royal Liverpool in July.
Some of the LIV golfers who are exempt from the tournament are Dustin Johnson and Cam Smith.
Johnnie Cole Hamilton, R&A’s executive Director of Champions, said that “we have created an exciting calendar of events which takes us to many regions around the globe and gives the opportunity for golfers the chance to earn a spot in the Open at Royal Liverpool.” “We are grateful for the support of our colleagues from the professional tours and we look forward to seeing who emerges at each event to secure a place in the Championship.”
The Open is the third major championship to confirm LIV participation, joining the Masters & U.S. Open.
The 151st Open at Royal Liverpool is scheduled for July 20-23.
