Los Angeles Country Club’s North Course will not play like other U.S. Open hosts. LACC, originally designed by George C. Thomas in 1928 and restored in 2010, will feature wider fairways that place a greater focus on strategy than other recent Open sites.
Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner and Geoff Shackelford, along with several other top assistants, cleared tons of trees in 2010 to restore the course as Thomas had intended. Players must be on the right side of a fairway in order to hit flags at various parts of the greens. Even a good shot from the wrong angle could result in a missed hole.
Some greens have bunkers cut into them. You may have to throw from the putting area, over the bunker, and then back onto the green. Or you might have to putt and risk your fate.
Don’t think that all the width is easy. The fairways are often steep, forcing players into a decision between accuracy and distance.
