LPGA stars face a $25k penalty for missing the season opener.

Jan, 2023

A Golfweek report states that two top LPGA Tour players are facing fines after missing the season opener.

This week, the LPGA season will begin at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions. But, Minjee Lee, the world number three, and Jin Young Ko, the world number five, won’t be there.

Due to their busy schedules, both players will likely skip the event. Lee lives in Australia, while Ko is in South Korea. The next tournament, which will be held in Thailand after the LPGA stop at Florida, isn’t until another month. It makes sense that the pair would not make the trip to Florida for one week.

Both players will be subject to the “LPGA 1-in-4” requirement. This requires that players who are in the top 80 CME points list must play in a domestic tournament no less than once every four years. Lee and Ko can apply for a one-time exemption to skip one of these events, avoiding the $25k penalty.

Lee and Ko will make their season debuts next month at Honda LPGA Thailand. This event kicks off a three week Asian swing on LPGA Tour.
