Ludvig Aberg will make his historic debut at 2023 Ryder Cup

Sep, 2023

Ludvig admits that he did not begin to consider playing for the Ryder Cup until late summer.

He won the Haskins Hogan and Nicklaus awards in May while playing college golf. His PGA Tour University card was earned and he immediately made a name on Tour. This is especially true with his ability off the tee. He won the European Masters earlier this month. This was the cherry on top of his trip to Italy.

The 23-year old Swedish sensation was still in college just five months ago. When he starts the 2023 Ryder Cup on Friday at Marco Simone, Italy, he’ll be the first golfer to ever play in a Ryder Cup prior to starting a major championship.

Aberg stated, “For me, I just tried to play well.” If someone had told me two months ago that I’d be playing in the Ryder Cup here, I probably would not have believed them. It’s amazing and a dream come to me to be here. I’m looking forward to the following days.

Aberg was named as one of the six captain’s choices by European captain Luke Donald. He said that Aberg has “the potential to become one of golf’s stars.”

He was the first Tour player to ever earn a card through PGA Tour University. In seven starts, he had four top-25 finishes including a T-4 finish at the John Deere classic.

Donald was impressed by Aberg’s game when they played together at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, in Detroit. The captain encouraged the youngster cross the pond and play more. He was given a spot on the team.

Aberg stated, “It is really cool how these last two months have turned out for me.” It’s been intense, and I’m trying my best to embrace it. I try to enjoy myself. “Yeah, it’s pretty cool to be here.”

Aberg, Robert MacIntyre, Nicolai Hjgaard and Sepp Straka are the four Europeans making their Ryder Cup débuts.

What is he looking for on the first tee?

Aberg said, “I wish I didn’t get nervous.” “I believe that anyone who plays golf feels the nerves at times. So do I, obviously. The same will be true for me on Saturday, Sunday and Friday of this week.

“It’s a great deal of excitement.” It’s a great anticipation of the future and I’m trying to see it as a positive. You know, it doesn’t have to affect my behavior negatively. It’s something that shows, you know, that I care. “I’m excited to have those feelings back.”
