Is it too late to declare Luke Donald a captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup at Rome?
He might have to decide if he plays the same way as he did at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.
“I felt that there were some low scores here, as long as it wasn’t too windy,” Donald said after playing here for the last few days. Donald commented after his round at Yas Links, “It kinda suits me eye.”
He was correct, I’m sure.
Donald began strong, making his first birdie of the day at the 10th. To make it 4-under 32, he’d add three more birdies to his front side. European Ryder Cup captain exchanged a birdie for a bogey on Nos. Before going on a run, he hit 2 and 3, his 11th and 12th. Donald made circles with the No. 9 card. 6-9 to return home in 32, for an 8-under 64-day one.
“I putted very well today, with the exception of a three-putt on the third hole for my one bogey. Donald stated that Donald made a few long putts, but was otherwise very clean. Maybe a little inspiration from watching the Hero Cup last week.
Later, he was asked about starting his own Ryder Cup team.
“1975 was the last occasion that this happened. We are still a long way away from that.
