Texas Forever. Augusta National’s Champions Locker Room has this feeling.
Charles Coody, 1971 winner, said that he and Byron Nelson share a locker with Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion. Coody said Monday that Augusta National contacted him after the 2022 Masters to inquire if he would be willing to move from being in the same space as Art Wall, the 1959 winner, to being with Scheffler and Nelson.
Coody stated, “I said, “As long Scottie is OK with it. That’s great with us.” “I am a team player.”
Fort Worth’s Nelson was the first Texan who conquered Augusta in 1937. The floodgates were opened. From Nelson’s victory to Jackie Burke’s 1956 miracle, 16 tournaments saw a Texan finish first or second.
From 1956 to 1971, when Coody defeated Jack Nicklaus in Jack Nicklaus’s final match, the state lost. Over the years, Ben Crenshaw was the only person to hold the baton, with wins in 1984 and 1995, before it was handed over to Jordan Spieth (2015) and Patrick Reed (2018).
