Matt Wallace birdies all nine holes on the back nine at DP World Tour Championship

Nov, 2023

Matt Wallace had a special day at the DP World Tour Championship on Saturday.

The 32-year old Englishman shot 12-under-60 in the third round of the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Club, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and moved into the lead with 18 holes remaining. Wallace, who won four DP World Tour titles in his career, is one shot ahead of Viktor Hovland (2023 FedEx Cup winner) and Tommy Fleetwood.

Wallace’s round, which featured nine consecutive birdies on nine, was special. He shot 27 and a 60. This is the lowest round of the DP World Tour for this season.

Wallace said, “What an incredible day. “I just tried to do my best to get back into the tournament. It’s great that I was able to achieve this. I played great.

“Again, at the end I didn’t think there was even a 59. It helped me, I’ll admit. “I just played well coming down the stretch. Just keep getting one more, if I could. I managed to achieve that.”

Wallace’s eagle on the 18th was just short, but a birdie at the end of his best round in Wallace’s career was the cherry on top. Wallace would have won his first Rolex Series championship with a victory on Sunday. Rory McIlroy, however, has been victorious in the Race to Dubai season-long points race of the DP World Tour for the fifth consecutive time.

Hovland matched Fleetwood’s 66s Saturday, continuing the trend they started the previous two days when they matched each other’s 69s and their 66s.

Wallace’s performance was so impressive that even the FedEx Cup champion, who is a former FedEx Cup winner, was impressed.

Hovland replied, “That is ridiculous.” You know, today it was easier to play, there wasn’t much wind. Greens were soft. The greens are grainy. It’s difficult to putt. Some of the pins, such as 17, are difficult to reach. There are a lot good pins. “60 pins out here is ridiculous.
