GREENSBORO (N.C.) — Russell Henley still has work to do at the Wyndham championship.

The 34-year old Georgia graduate has placed in the top 10 of Sedgefield Country club the last three seasons, including 2021 when he lost the lead at the final hole and was unable to make a playoff.

He said, “I think about that a lot.” “I was in the lead by three points going into the final round two years ago, and I was leading the tourney by a few points going into the No. It was 11 years ago, or the previous year. It was a great learning experience and I feel that it has made me a better player.

Henley shot an 8-under-62 on Thursday with six birdies, including one eagle. Henley is now in the lead by a stroke over South Korea’s Ben An as well as Canadian Adam Svensson.

Henley’s afternoon wave played under better conditions for scoring after the morning rain had stopped.

He said, “The first small part of the front nine, it was raining, and I felt, man, this might be a rough day, especially if things pick up a bit.” “I was hoping that it would ease up a bit.” It did slow down on the back nine so we were lucky.

Henley led the field of Strokes Gained : Tee to Green during the first round. His 62 score was his eighth score of 63 points or more since the start the 2020-21 season. He tied with Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm for the most scores of 63 points or higher.
