Matteo Manassero’s journey to win the race has been a strange one.
The 30-year-old Italian won his first European Challenge Tour title in Copenhagen Challenge, on the 10th anniversary of his BMW PGA Championship win.
Manassero is a four-time DP World Tour champion and the youngest player ever to win three times in the European circuit. He shot a bogey free final-round 66 which was good for a one shot victory at 12 below par. This was his first title after winning the 2020 Toscana Open of the Alps Tour.
He began playing golf with plastic clubs at the age of three. He won the British Amateur Championship at 16 and the British Open Championship 2009 with a silver medal as the lowest amateur. Manassero reached the Official World Golf Ranking as high as 25 . The Italian short-hitter chased distance and lost control over his swing and game. He was ranked No. 575 in the world when he entered this week. He entered the week No.
Manassero began the day six shots off the overnight leader Matias Honkala. However, he made a 3-foot birdie on the 72 ndhole in order to claim his first DP World Tour sanctioned win since his heroics from Wentworth 2013.
He said, “There are many emotions.” It’s been 10 years since I won the Tour, so I suppose May is my favorite month.
It’s the best week I’ve had in a long time.
Manassero began the final round strongly with two birdies on the second and eighth holes. Manassero shared the lead with Honkala and South African teenager Casey Jarvis. He rose to the top, however, with birdies on the 14 the thand 15 the th holes before the clincher hole at 18. Jarvis was crowned the Royal Golf Club champion by just one stroke. Manassero was able to enjoy the moment, after a decade of being lost in the golf wilderness. He had been a can’t miss-kid and one of the most disappointing players in the game.
He said, “I had many down times during the ten years I was here but now that I am holding the trophy I can say I have done many good things in that time.” “I may have not enjoyed enough good times in the past, but now I will.”
“I was not feeling well and had doubts about my golf game when I came to this week. You can’t afford to not be in top form on this golf course. But sometimes, you work hard and nothing happens and then all of a suddenly it clicks.
Golf is a strange game that can be difficult to grasp at times. We shouldn’t spend too much time trying to figure it out.
Manassero moved up to the fifth position in the Road to Mallorca Rankings, moving up from the 40 th spot. Jarvis also moves up to number two from 15 th.
