The race to see who will be the Olympic Games’ powerhouses, like the United States or South Korea, is always exciting. However, many golfers are unaware of a significant portion of the field.
The current system would allow 15 players outside of the top 200 to qualify for the 60 player field. Many of these players are not LPGA members.
Players will have approximately six months to secure a place with a qualification cutoff date of 24 June, or immediately after the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. The women’s Olympic competition will take place from Aug. 7-10. This is immediately following the men’s event.
Here is a quick review of the qualifying process:
The International Golf Federation uses the Rolex Rankings in order to create its Olympic Golf Rankings. Paris is open to the top 15 players of the world, but only four from each country are allowed. The United States has four players at the moment.
The remaining players will be selected directly from the ranking, with no more than two players per country from any other countries that do not have at least two players in the top 15
Celine Boutier (currently No. 1), the host nation, will be awarded at least one place. 3.
With only four players, including those from the U.S.A. and South Korea will again leave behind some highly decorated players.
