Michael Block’s RAW hat at the PGA Championship: what does it mean?

May, 2023

Michael Block, 46, is a PGA of America pro and head professional at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club, Mission Viejo in California. he’s also the toast at Oak Hill Country Club this week and is one of the most popular golfers in the field for the 2023 PGA Championship.

Block, the only PGA of America pro to make Friday’s cut, was already a story. But after shooting a third consecutive round of 70 he finished just six shots off the leader Brooks Koepka and will play Sunday with Rory McIlroy.

Block wore on Friday a hat with the word “RAW” written on it. Many people do not know what this means.

The TaylorMade milled grind 3 (MG3) wedges are finished in raw steel. Some brands offer un-chromed irons or wedges, which will rust with time and moisture. The MG3 wedges come with a raw steel surface, but a sticker covers it so that nothing rusts before the clubs are bought.

TaylorMade’s staff professionals wore RAW hats to promote the clubs shortly after they were released on August 20, 2021. The hats are now available for purchase through the company website. Teaching professionals such as Block are often given promotional items, including hats and towels. Bluetooth speakers, headcovers and Bluetooth speakers, too.

You’re outta luck if you want a RAW cap. TaylorMade and other golf retailers list them as sold out. Golfweek contacted TaylorMade representatives, but no news was received.
