Mike Weir is named International Team Captain in 2024 Presidents Cup

It was no surprise that Mike Weir, a Canadian, was named captain of the International Team for Tuesday’s 2024 Presidents Cup. The tournament will be held at Royal Montreal Golf Club, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Weir said, “Presidents Cup is such an important part of my life, so to be here today announced as captain for the 2024 International Team”

Weir was the first Canadian to win a major in men’s tennis. Weir, 52 years old, is primed to take over South Africa’s Trevor Immelman’s captaincy. He has been the captain’s assistant in three consecutive plays, the most recent being the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Club, September. In 2019, the International Team built its largest lead in Presidents Cup history, before losing to the U.S.-led Tiger Woods. The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia. Team 16-14. Weir stated, “When I look back on this event, I have so many amazing memories associated with it whether it was my debut in 2000; winning my singles against Tiger in 2007 in Royal Montreal; witnessing Ernie win the shield in 2019; then watching Trevor carry that momentum into 2022.” “I look forward with anticipation to 2024 and I can’t wait to take the International Team to Canada. It will be an unforgettable experience.”

He is an eight-time PGA Tour champion and holds a 13-9-2 all-time record at the Presidents Cup. He is also one of six International Team members who has 10 or more match wins. The Presidents Cup was held in Canada in 2007. Weir won with a record of 3-1-1, highlighted by a victory in singles over Tiger Woods.

Jay Monahan, PGA Tour Commissioner, stated that “as an icon in Canada, he certainly will be the full support of the Canadian fans in building a distinctive home-field advantage to the International Team.”

Weir became a professional in 1992 and won his first Tour title at 1999 Air Canada Championship. He defeated Fred Funk by two strokes, becoming the first Canadian winner on Tour since Richard Zokol. He won seven more titles, including the 2003 Masters, one of three wins that season. Between 2001 and 2005, he spent more than 110 weeks in the Top-10 of the Official World Golf Ranking. He is currently a PGA Tour Champion competitor, where he won the 2021 Insperity Invitational.

The 2024 Presidents Cup will take place at Royal Montreal Golf Club from September 24-29. The Royal Montreal Golf Club was founded in 1873 and is North America’s oldest golf club. The Blue Course was designed and built by Dick Wilson. It was updated by Rees Jones in 2004/2005. Royal Montreal hosted the Presidents Cup on 10 occasions. The most recent was in 2014.

Weir stated, “Captaining this team at the golf course is going to create an entire new part of history in my professional career that cannot be replaced.” I feel so proud to bring the team home, knowing that the Canadian people are some of the most passionate and loyal sports fans anywhere. We hope to have some Canadians join the team, who will be able to elicit the loudest cheers at the event.
