Molly Smith, a native of her home state, made history on Tuesday.
The rising college freshmen shot a 1-over-par 73 at Andover Country Club in order to qualify for Massachusetts Amateur Championship. Smith may be the first female to qualify for the championship’s 115-year history.
Tripp Hollister was the winner of the qualifier, with a score of 4-under-68. A total of seven players in the field of 83 advanced to the Massachusetts Amateur, which is July 10-14 at Essex County Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea. Andover Country club was 6,639 yards.
Last month, 18-year old Smith made headlines after she shot a 2-under-70 to just miss the cut at a U.S. Open qualifier in Lakeville.
